BBC Radio Guernsey
Interview from Ploegsteert Memorial
Broadcast on Saturday 12th April 2008 to commemorate
the 90th anniversary of the R.G.L.I. losses during the battle of the Lys.
100
Guernsey men aged between 17 and 42 are commemorated here, of whom 96 were members
of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry who died between 11th and 13th April 1918,
exactly 90 years ago this weekend. Another 25 are buried in nearby cemeteries.
This was effectively the end of the Regiment as a fighting force
- it had only been formed 18 months earlier and approximately the same number
of men had been killed at Cambrai in November-December 1917
