HMS Britannia
On 9 November 1918, Britannia was torpedoed
off Cape Trafalgar by the German submarine UB-50.
Britannia kept afloat with a 10-degree
list for 2½ hours before sinking, allowing most
of the rest of the crew to be rescued. Most of the men
who were lost were killed by smoke inhalation. 50 men
died and 80 were injured.
Sunk only two days before the Armistice
ending World War I was signed on 11 November 1918, Britannia
was the last Royal Navy vessel to be sunk during World
War I.
