(Reported GWP Saturday,
October 30, 1915)
During the fist week of October unofficial news was received
of the death of No. 18297 Corp. C.J. Smith, of the Wiltshires,
who was killed in action. Mrs Smith, who resides at 27
George Street, has now received official news from the
War Office of the death of her husband, accompanied by
the customary expression of sympathy from he Minister
of war. Corp. Smith was wounded in the groin on September
26, but gallantly fought on till he succumbed as the result
of weakness and loss of blood. This gallant soldier fought
through the South African war, winning both the Queens
and Kings medal. He retired after 16 years
service, but re-enlisted ten months ago. He leaves a widow
and seven children, the youngest being but 18 months old.
