Private Albert Edouard Alexandré
1st Battalion, Royal Guernsey Light Infantry
Chevalier Légion d'Honneur
(1999)
Albert was born in Jersey, orphaned, lived with family
members before moving to Alderney, to live with a distant
relative, where he worked in the stone quarries from
age 14.
He travelled to France with a reinforcement draft (R12),
just in time for the Regiments first Battle at Cambrai
in November 1917. He was conscripted, aged 16 years
old.
He passed away in January 2002, aged 100 years.
"If we need a reason, to do what we do"
he said to me over lunch one day in the dining hall
at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, "Do not let people
forget what we went through"
