Herbert Brooks

Captain Herbert Brooks
321 Quarry Coy, Royal Engineers

He was born on 28th September 1883 at Halifax. Married 17th August 1908 Vale Church, Guernsey, to Ethel May Robinson. Went to Guernsey in 1905 as Manager for Brooks Ltd. Granite Merchants. He had previously been with the firm in Halifax.


Captain Herbert Brooks, Royal Engineers took over Command of the 321 Quarrying Company. It was formed by the volunteers from Guernsey quarries on 14th April 1917.

Herbert spent the WW2 Guernsey occupation years in London & Halifax in service of the company, returning to Guernsey after WW11 to find the works and quarries in a desolate condition. the firm sent him to Alderney for a few months in 1921. Soon afterwards he accepted the post of Manager of A&F Manuelle Ltd. Granite Merchants, St Sampson's, Guernsey.

His greatest achievement was the restoration of the Quarries. He retired in September 1950 after 30 years of service.

Herbert died in Guernsey in 1951
