Herbert Druce

HMS Attentive 2 (Mentor), Royal Navy

 

Born on 16 Jan 1897 at St Peter Port, Guernsey per baptism register and census records. The son of Reginald Druce and Ellen Louisa Druce. He worked as boxmaker before enlisting. Shown as Herbert in GWP but actually christened Bertie. Enlisted 29 Nov 1912 when he stated that his date of birth was 1 November 1894. 5ft 5in, 36 in chest, brown hair, brown eyes and dark complexion. No tattoos. He was serving on HMS Leander at start of the war. Transferred to HMS "St George Seal" on 14 Nov 1914 (when photo was taken). He also served on HMS "Wallington", HMS "Vivid" at Woolwich, HMS "Dido" (sanfly/Mentor) and finally HMS "Attentive". Discharged 17/07/1917 but may have gone AWOL (service record says "S165 Attentive II" and reason for discharge just says Run).
