Born in 1894 at St Ann, Alderney. Son of 50 year old Sergeant Thomas James Garth, A.I.F (ex-4th Royal Fusiliers) who was KIA in 1916 at Villers-Bretonneux, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France and husband of Sarah Ann Garth(née Martin), of Mowbray, Launceston, Tasmania.

John Garth married Josephine Gertrude Smith from Australia in 1919
