He was born in Guernsey in 1886. Son of William J &
Ellen J Patterson (Irish father and mother from Alderney).
By 1891 the family had moved to Liverpool and then Birkenhead.
He enlisted into the Royal Artillery in 1906. Posted
to 70 battery, 34 brigade RFA on the outbreak of war.
