His granddaugher Catherine writes:
"We know so little of this period in his life. Pretty much all I think I know is he lied about his age so he could enlist, to follow his big brother Louis, 4 years his senior.
Although given that he was born 15 July 1899 at at Quintin, France, he would have been 18 at the time of his embarkation. We believe he served in India and that he used to look after horses during his service"
