                        Born in 1895 at Guernsey. The son of Cornish (Liskeard) 
                          born John Henry & Clara Bessie Crouch. Brother of 
                          John Henry James Phillips and cousin of Joseph Phillips 
                          who also served. Nephew of Joseph & Josephine Phillips 
                          of Bosq Lane, Guernsey. Moved to Plymouth between 1895 
                          and 1897. Was working as a messenger boy and living 
                          with uncle Joseph Phillips (Confectioner) at Bonnie 
                          Cottage, Bosq Lane in 1911. Enlisted 9/10/1913 when 
                          he was working as a boxmaker (wood). Started out as 
                          Boy on HMS Vivid I (Devonport) and was transferred to 
                          HMS London on 07/02/1914. Also served on HMS Defiance, 
                          HMS Idaho and finished the war on HMS Victory X (P35) 
                          as an Able Seaman which was a submarine chaser. Served 
                          on HMS Defiance again and HMS Apollo before being invalided 
                          out on 31 December 1919. Went back to Guernsey after 
                          the war and was living with his Annie Elizabeth at Douglas 
                          Place, Bouet, St Peter Port, working for a fruit grower, 
                          Mr Gavey at Pike's Corner as a greenhouse worker. When 
                          he signed up in 1913 he was only 5ft 0.75in tall with 
                          a 33 inch chest, brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. 
                          Scar on right forearm.
