Born in 1891 at Polot (Pollet), Guernsey. Son of John Henry Phillips and Clara Bessie Couch. Brother of Arthur Charles Phillips who also served.

Enlisted 17/06/1915, Swansea. Baker when enlisted 5ft 1.25in, 107lb, 33.5 chest. Admitted to Berrington War Hospital, Shrewsbury with nephritis 07/02/1917, 54 days in hospital. Admitted to Bradstone on 20/06/1917 with gastric ulcer. His teeth were very bad and he had several extractions. Admitted to Runcorn Vicarage Hospital 22/02/1918 with neurasthenia for 50 days.
