Sapper Walter George Rampton
257th Battalion, Canadian Overseas Expeditionary
Force
Born in 1886 at Les Hubits, St. Martin's, Guernsey.
Son of George and Sophia Rampton. Husband of Alice Rampton
He was sent to Royal Military Asylum (school) in Chelsea
as Army apprentice on 31st Jan 1896, discharged 7 April
1902 into the regular Army, joining the Royal Regiment
of Artillery (RHA/RFA) with service no.6939 until discharge
7 April 1912. He then emigrated to the USA arriving
later in April 1912 in Portland, Maine aboard SS Ausoria.
Finding his way to Canada he eventually joined their
Expeditionary Force on 1st Feb 1917 as Sapper with service
no 1102343, in Lindsay, Ontario. There's a record of
him returning to Halifax, Nova Scotia on SS Mauritania,
on furlough, on 15th April 1918.
He survived the war, and returned to England in 1938,
then to Guernsey, and was a Plasterer's mate in the
Mathews diving party, occupation ID no. A16033.
