NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 28 June 1917

Roll of Honour. For many months past Mr & Mrs Barnes of Suzanne Cottage, Janvrin Road have been anxious as to the fate of their eldest son, Lane Corporal Walter Barnes of the Yorkshire Regiment, who was reported missing on 23 July 1916. Enquiries have been made in many quarters and today we regret to state that the parents have received official intimation that the War Office is regretfully constrained to conclude that the soldier is dead and that the death took place on the date mentioned above. The late NCO was in his 28th year and was a member of the original gallant expeditionary force, he had shown conspicuous bravery during the campaign and had been awarded a Parchment signed by the Major General of the 7th Division for gallantry and devotion to duty. To the parents, who have two other soldier sons one of whom has been wounded, and the other relatives we offer our sincere condolences.
