NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 10 December 1914

Roll of Honour. It is with extreme regret we have to record the death of another Jersey soldier, Sergeant W J Nolais of the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment. This most promising soldier was wounded some time ago whilst serving out ammunition and was removed to Rouen Hospital. His injuries consisted of wounds in the left arm and shoulder and were so severe that the limb had to be amputated. A sad feature is that the Sergeant received a commission on the same day that he was wounded. He was only married a few months ago and on receiving notification that he was at Rouen his wife (nee Miss Giffard) left to visit him. Yesterday his parents, Mr & Mrs Nolais of St Aubins, received unfavourable news and they left last night by the SS Laura to visit their son. Unfortunately they could not have arrived at his bedside in time to see him before he breathed his last, for a wire was received this morning stating that he had died from his injuries. The deceased was formerly a champion of St Aubins Swimming Club and had also been champion diver at Aldershot. To his widow and relatives we beg to offer our sincere condolences in their bereavement.

Notice of Death appears in Jersey Evening Post of Saturday 19 December 1914

Commemorated on St Brelade's Parish Memorial
