NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post
of Thursday 30 August 1917
Roll of Honour. We regret to announce
the death of Rifleman James Vibert of the 7th Battalion
Royal Irish Rifles, who was killed in action while fighting
on the Western Front on 16th August. The news of the
death of this gallant young soldier was conveyed to
his parents, Mr & Mrs G Vibert of First Tower, yesterday
in a most sympathetic letter from his Company Officer,
who alluded to the very high soldierly qualities of
the deceased and said how greatly he would be missed
by all ranks in the Company and Battalion. Rifleman
James Vibert joined up with the original Jersey Contingent
in the early part of 1915 and has seen continuous active
service since then. The bereaved parents also received
a letter from Corporal F Drouin, a comrade and close
friend of the deceased, who stated that death had come
very soon after he was wounded so he did not suffer
greatly and that his last words were "goodbye to
all". We might also state that Mr & Mrs Vibert
have another son, Rifleman John Vibert, who enlisted
at the same time as his brother, who has been posted
as missing since 27 August 1916, but the parents have
not abandoned hope that news will eventually be received
that he is a prisoner in the hands of the enemy. We
extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved parents
