James Stewart
Petty Officer 1st Class/ Acting Chief Stoker, James Stewart
HMS "Pegasus", Royal Navy

Born in 1879 at Longstore, Guernsey. The youngest son of James Stewart and Sarah Ann Turner. He Married Henrietta White in 1908 at Plymouth. In 1891 he was a gardener's apprentice and boarding with his brother-in-law and sister, Walter and Amelia Pike at Les Ruettes, St Andrew's, Guernsey. He enlisted 14th September 1898 for 12 years , starting as a stoker. His first ship was HMS "Benbow". Shown in the 1911 census as on board HMS "Cambrian" in Australia. He became Leading Stoker and married. At the start of the war he was serving on HMS "Foresight" on the Dover Patrol and in the Mediterranean. He had a spell of ashora before joining HMS "Pegasus" on 13th October 1917 as acting chief stoker, confirmed in post on the 5th of March 1919. "Pegasus" was an aircraft carrier commissioned on 14th August 1917. She supported the British intervention in the Russian Civil War between May and September 1919, based at Archangel. He inished his service on HMS "Glorious", the flagship of the rear admiral at Devonport, on 22nd August 1921.
Living at 12 St Jude's Road, Plymouth with his wife Henrietta in 1921, still on the "Colossus" but already a pensioner. He Rreceived War Gratuity in relation to HMS "Pegasus". In 1939 was a watcher for Customs & Excise living in Bristol with his wife.

He was Brother in law to Private Reginald Druce, uncle of AB Reginald Stewart Druce, Stoker Harold and Stoker Herbert Druce, who all also served.
